Scotts Weekly Review - Safe and Sound Car Seat

This weeks product review is on Safe & Sound Car Seat, Pyper has just about grown out of her capsule, I'm a bit sad about that as it meant we had to buy another car seat ... so more money down the drain. But once again it's all about safety so there's no excuse really.

We got the Safe&Sound Car Seat as a gift and initially I thought "it's a good looking car seat". Here's what I found:

Pros

  • Certified up to a weight of 18kgs
  • Sturdy with lots of cushions and padding
  • Pretty dirt resistant from what I can tell

Cons

  • Needs hooks in the car to lock the seat in place
  • Only reclines in the back facing position
  • Quite expensive
  • It has a 3 point (6 straps) harness - quite complicated to put on and secure

Dads choice awards: top free iPhone apps for toddlers

Here's a list of top free iPhone apps for Toddlers. Surprisingly there are actually not that many (useful ones). There are lots of variations of memory games, flash cards and sound apps but by and large they are all the same. The ranking of the apps below is determined by votes (one vote per day max). You can submit any other toddler apps to get them included in the ranking.

Toddler Flashcards (Free)Toddler Flashcards (free)
The name says it all - an app that displays flashcards to prompt toddlers to say (announce) the object / concept they see on the screen. Great for traveling and you'll never ever lose a cardboard flashcard again or have it chewed to bits by your dog.

The sh*t that ends up in baby wipes

Obviously baby wipes are designed to contain a lot of nasty stuff after they have been used. But I didn't know they already contain a lot of it straight out of the package! In recent weeks there have been widespread product recalls of baby wipes because some brands contain a chemical called "iodopropynyl butylcarbamate" (IPBC) which is believed to be toxic when inhaled. The use of IPBC for cosmetic products is restricted in many countries and it is linked to skin conditions (not surprising when you consider that it was originally designed / used for wood and paint preservation).

The new dad

If you've always wanted to read some research on dads in the 21st century - here's your chance. Prof Brad Harrington at the Center for Work and Family, Boston College just published a major study on contemporary dadhood. His report "The New Dad: Caring, Committed and Conflicted" contains an in-depth portrait of working dads in the US. Key findings include that 21st century dads see their role equally as “breadwinner” and effective caregiver. The new generation of dads want to be engaged parents and successful professionals at the same time. Hence the inevitable conflict. Read the full report here for details (it's a bit long ... 48 pages ... so perhaps just download it to your laptop / iPad and read it next time your flight is delayed).

Enjoy,

Stef

They publish inspirational stories about amazing people in history and bring you "face to face" with individuals that have helped form the world we live in today. It's a different take on just reading books or Wikipedia entries.

If ever you needed an example for your kids of a guy who just wouldn't give up to achieve his vision (literally) - Thomas Edison would be it.

Enjoy!

Most dad-friendly product ever - animoto

In all the years of doing DIYFather I haven't come across anything more dad-friendly than a site called Animoto. Seriously ... it ticks all the boxes for dads:

  • solve a key problem for new parents: creating something cool for your relatives, family and kids

  • absolutely hassle-free and super easy to do

  • takes virtually no time (a few minutes)

  • the tool does all the hard work

  • free (or pretty cheap)

Forget all the lame slide shows you were going to put together for the family on special occasions - use Animoto to produce very slick looking videos in a few minutes ... this clip took less than 5 mins to put together:

Go the f**k to sleep

So what's the big deal about Adam Mansbach's book "Go the f**k to sleep"? The big deal is that (as you can guess from the title)it is written like a children's book but uses profanities in verse. It's kind of funny (ish) but gets very repetitive after the first 4 pages ... ah well, that hasn't stopped thousands of people ordering it on Amazon (and getting it to the #1 spot on the bestseller list). Personally I don't think it's that hilarious, outrageous and amazing as everyone makes it out to be - but hey let's applaud the authors for going where no other children's book has gone before!
